Sustainable and Healthy Design
The Why?

Standard building materials and household products typically contain harmful toxins and chemicals that contribute to unhealthy indoor environments, poor air quality, and significant environmental harm. Research shows that indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air, while people spend 90% of their time indoors. Substances such as PFAS (“forever chemicals”), formaldehyde, phthalates, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are commonly found in building and household products and have been linked to serious health concerns, including respiratory issues, infertility, endocrine disruption, certain cancers, and adverse effects for individuals with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). Women and children are particularly vulnerable, and low-income housing and communities are disproportionately exposed to harmful chemicals and pollutants.

Beyond human health impacts, the sourcing, production, and disposal of conventional building materials contribute heavily to environmental pollution. Most products made from toxic synthetic chemicals and plastics —often derived from non-renewable petrochemicals — are neither biodegradable nor recyclable. When discarded, they can remain in landfills for centuries, off-gassing, leaching into soil and waterways, and breaking down into microplastics that further contaminate ecosystems.

Our buildings and interior spaces should be safe, healthy, and thoughtfully designed using non-toxic, durable, high-quality natural materials and products that support human wellness while generating positive carbon and social impact. To protect people, pets, and the planet, materials must be non-toxic and sustainable throughout their entire life cycle—from extraction and production to use, reuse, and regeneration (Cradle to Cradle).

The mission of EcoAbode is to design and guide the creation of beautiful, safe, and healthy interior spaces that prioritize health and wellness through non-toxic, natural materials and thoughtful design. EcoAbode also strives to inspire, educate, and advocate — raising awareness about toxic building materials and products while empowering individuals and communities to make healthier, more sustainable choices.
