Healthy Design
The Why?
Standard building materials and products typically contain harmful toxins and chemicals, resulting in unsafe spaces, poor indoor air quality, and negatively impacting the environment. Studies have shown that indoor air quality is 2-5 times worse than outdoor air. These toxins such as PFAS (forever chemicals), formaldehyde, phthalates, and VOCs, have been shown to cause human health issues including cancer, respiratory issues, infertility, and to potentially affect those with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). Women and children are especially vulnerable to the harmful effects of pollutants in interiors. Low-income housing has been historically known to have more toxic materials and environmental hazards. Furthermore, the sourcing, production, and end use of such materials and products is polluting to the environment. Materials and products made from toxic synthetic chemicals and plastics, which are created in part from non-renewable petrochemicals, are not biodegradable and usually not recyclable, and upon disposal, sit in landfills for hundreds of years potentially off gassing, leaching into soil and water, and degrading into microplastics. Yuck!
Let’s keep toxic materials and products out of our homes, buildings, and environment.
For the health and safety of people, pets, and our planet, materials and products need to be non-toxic and sustainable in all cyclical phases from extraction and production, use, and reuse (Cradle to Cradle).
Our buildings and interior spaces should be safe and healthy, built, finished, and furnished with non-toxic, beautiful, durable, high quality, sustainable, natural materials and products that have an overall positive carbon and social footprint.

The MISSION of EcoAbode is to educate, advocate, and bring awareness about toxic building materials and products, and to inspire, advise, and design beautiful, safe, healthy interior spaces, with a focus on non-toxic, natural materials and products.
